The Denim Mini Skirt

Everyone has their own go-to outfit that they have been wearing ever since their teenage years no matter the years gone by, no matter the weather, and no matter the fashion trends. For most of us, jeans usually end up being our escape route when we lack inspiration or don't feel so good. I am a heavy consumer of jeans and wouldn't deny they're the best thing invented after underwear. But it has actually taken me a while to get used to jeans which I never really found that flattering.

Worn with an off-shoulder oversize shirt for an extra feminine effect

Denim mini skirts, on the other hand, have always been my best fashion friends. Why would such a short piece of clothing be any woman's best friend? Well, let us not forget that even if we have grown so accustomed to wearing jeans, even if there is something to be said about the feminity of androgynous looks, skirts almost entirely exclusively remain the apanage of women. They were designed to tighten our waist, emphasise our hips and show off our legs. And perhaps more importantly, they create a balance where we have imperfections.

With a blazer and ankle boots for a perfect Parisian chic look (you don't necessarily have to smoke to create this effect luckily)

I personally hate my knees. They're chubby, knobbly, inward facing and not very delicate at all. And while there is nothing I can really do about it, I am totally obsessed with the ugliness of my knees... Every woman is allowed some degree of physical neurosis, right? So, anyway, knees are not my forte. And if you ever see me wear some midi skirt that sits just over the knee, you might sympathise with me. But mini skirts almost have a magical effect on me as they move the focus away from my gruffalo knees by lengthening the legs and emphasising the waist.

Mid season dressed up style. Love everything about this look

A final very important point to note is that mini denim skirts are incredibly versatile. As shown on the pictures featured here, they can be dressed up (with a blazer, a chic accessory, both) or down (with an oversize shirt, a tank top, a swearshirt, a pair of trainers). And I wear them equally in Winter and Summer. Love styling them with opaque tights and boots when it's cold, with flats and white tees when it's warm.

With trainers, for a casual cool vibe

Because they're such an essential wardrobe piece, denim mini skirts are very easy to find. Many have been adapted to be fit with the current trends (embroidered, distressed, pearl details etc) but if you never worn any before I would recommend starting with a classic cut. Here are all the styles I would vouch, including the ones I might succumb to. Hope you're now convinced and happy shopping!

My favourite ones

1. All Saints Birds Embroidered Denim Skirt, £88 - Came across this one while doing research for this post, can't stop thinking about it now!

2. Zara Denim Mini Skirt with Pearl Details, £25.99 - The denim wash and pearl details combined with the distressed effect are just perfect. Top of my 'to buy' list

The cult classics

1. Current/Elliott The Naval Denim Mini Skirt (on The Outnet), £110.70 - I own a similar buttoned up skirt and actually even dare to wear it to work

2. Claudie Pierlot Selena Skirt, £145 - Probably too long for me (because of the above knee issue...) but nice pencil cut

3. Marc by Marc Jacobs Icon Faded Denim Skirt (on The Outnet), £64.60 - The ultimate denim mini. Every woman should own one

The trendy ones

1. Topshop Black Stud Denim Mini Skirt, £36 - Bought this one last week. It's fantastic. Short but not too short. High waisted. And the studs of course. Soon to be seen on my Insta page...

2. Topshop Blue Stud Denim Mini Skirt, £36 - Love the black one so much that I could possibly also fall for the blue

3. Maje Short Multicoloured Denim Skirt, £145 - The multicoloured, patch effect is obviously mega on trend. Couldn't find many that I really like but this one is definitely cute

4. H&M Pink Denim Skirt, £19.99 - Pink of course, because there is no way you will be able to get through this Summer without it!

5. Zara Ripped Mini Denim Skirt with Japanese Design, £29.99 - A bit conspicuous but that does not necessarily stop me. On the contrary!

6. The Kooples Short Denim Embroidered Skirt, £168 - Gorgeous details, including the flower buttons. If it wasn't so expensive it would already be mine...
