White Shirts forever
A white shirt is like the first chapter of a fashion diary: it allows you to tell whichever story your mood is taking you. While it is an absolute classic it is anything but boring as it can be worn, styled and accessorised according to your every whim. And it is the perfect wardrobe safe haven when you are lacking inspiration.
There are so many different ways to wear the white shirt that it's almost impossible to think of a combination that would not work.
The traditional version
The white shirt worn with a suit is the essence of ultimate elegance. For a less serious feel, try with a tuxedo jacket. And a pussy bow type white shirt will likely be your best option here, for example from Claudie Pierlot (see below).
Casual Chic
For a more casual chic look, wear the white shirt with a pair of jeans of course or a black midi skirt (and oversize sunglasses à la Victoria Beckham). With either flats or heels, this ensemble will look incredibly chic. I would recommend a tailored shirt with folded sleeves for this look like the J.Crew New Perfect Shirt (see below).
Preppy
To achieve the right kind of preppy style, the white shirt works wonders with suspender trousers as styled by French actress Audrey Tautou. Faultless, particularly if opting for a more sophisticated style of shirt (with large cuffs, oversize collar or ruffles for example). French designer Anne Fontaine offers a wide range of incredibly romantic white shirts but does not retail online in the UK unfortunately (but she has two London shops, one on New Bond street, and one on Sloane street, unsurprisingly; and you can also find her former collections at the Bicester village). Alternatively, Phillip Lim is a really nice fall back option if you would rather buy from your couch (see below).
Rock star
For a fashion rock attitude, it's all about the details and the accessories: smoky eyes, black hat, destroyed denims, ankle boots... For this type of a look, try a simple silk shirt such as Equipment's signature shirts (see below).
Summer farniente
Finally, during lazy Summer days, pair your white shirt with shorts and flats. The perfect combination for looking stylish effortlessly. Choose a boyfriend cut for this type of look, from Cos for example (see below).
